A rare “maki-e” lacquer box, made with gold and pewter powder, inlaid with a stylised moth and butterfly, in mother of pearl and abalone.
The box was created in 1906 when master lacquer Seizô Sugawara was working in the ateliers teaching Gaillard the art of lacquer, and he is most likely to have realised the lacquerwork, while carpenter Kichizo Inagaki, also working alongside Gaillard, made the box.
